Hey gitpaws, in answer to your question, first let me clarify the blog title: it should have asked if you've experimented with very many different KINDS or VARIATIONS of finger picks. As I re-read the title, it almost looks like I'm asking if you've tried finger picks at all. Yes, EVERY 5-string bluegrass banjo player uses finger picks. But there are many kinds.

So is there anything wrong with finger picking guitar with your nails? Nope. Many guitarists do that, especially classical players. Would you play the banjo this way? Nope. You'd never keep up and you'd never be heard.

5-string bluegrass banjo is all about the volume, the drive, the speed, and the power. Metal picks provide you with all these things. Try to use your nails and you'll be slow, you'll be quiet, and you won't have the classic bluegrass touch.

So like it or not, if you are switching to banjo, you'll need to get used to finger picks! Sound awkward at first, but after a couple days you wonder how you ever learned to play without them.

Thanks gitpaws!!

Another stupid question from a guitar player who is just now learning banjo. I have long fingernails on my right hand. Been finger picking that way for over 40 years. Anything wrong with that?
